Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche Responds to False Report by Mirror Weekly


Today, I would like to address the monasteries, Buddhist institutes, and retreat centers located in Tibet and abroad, as well as the faithful followers of the First and Second Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoches—especially those who are connected with me personally, either in worldly matters or through the Dharma.

Some of you may already be aware of a recent incident. A woman from Taiwan has claimed: “He sent me to the Karmapa to use my beauty to seduce him.” This was reported in a weekly publication in Taiwan.

This woman has been coming to see me for several years. She is one among many different types of followers who come here. She is neither a particularly close student nor someone working under my direct guidance. A few years ago, she asked me, “Can I go to pay respects to the Karmapa?” I said, “Of course you can.”

This does not only apply to the Karmapa—whenever someone tells me they wish to go and visit other Khenpos or spiritual teachers, I naturally do not stop them. On the contrary, I rejoice in their intentions. Regardless of a person’s gender or status, I have never stopped anyone from visiting another teacher.

On one hand, I am well aware that if you say to someone, “You are not allowed to visit other masters,” it can easily become a source of harm and conflict.

In this life, I have met the Karmapa about seven times, always in public settings or at events. I have never had the opportunity to sit down and have a long conversation with him. Therefore, whether in worldly terms or in the Dharma, it cannot be said that we have a particularly close relationship.

Because of this, not only did I never send this woman to the Karmapa, I have never even had such a thought in my mind.

What I want to particularly emphasize today is this: there is a lineage connection of four generations of Dharma and samaya between His Holiness the Karmapa and the First and Second Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoches. I personally believe that, now and in the future, His Holiness the Karmapa is a great teacher who can spread the Dharma and benefit sentient beings.

Due to this recent incident, when disciples see these kinds of statements online or on television, both sides—out of loyalty to their own teachers and Dharma lineages—may end up writing or speaking words that defame the other side. If that happens, that would be the true “obstacle.”

Therefore, I hereby appeal to all those connected to the First and Second Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoches and to myself: please do not write or speak defamatory words against each other. I sincerely urge again—if anyone directs slander toward us, do not retaliate with slander against them.

In the near future, the actions, behavior, nature, and true circumstances of this woman will naturally become evident, and then the truth of the situation will be clear.
